Relieve stress when moving home

November 19, 2020

Moving house can be difficult and stressful, but following these steps will help you to reduce your anxieties and make the process easier and more enjoyable.

Relieve stress and improve your energy levels by following these steps

It’s generally accepted that stress is a major aspect of the moving process. When you move house, you are welcoming change into your life, and change comes with its own anxieties. But change is also exciting. Not only do we want to reduce stress levels generally in order to boost our energy levels, but we also want to convert that stress into positive energy to make the moving process easier and more bearable. So why is it important to reduce stress?

Stress doesn’t just exist in our minds. It can have some very negative effects on our physical health, and especially our energy and serotonin levels. Here, let’s talk more specifically about the stresses of moving house, and what can be done to combat unwanted anxieties and low energy levels.

Firstly, what is stress and what is it caused by?

Everyone knows what it feels like to be stressed. You feel overwhelming emotional or physical tension caused by some sort of trigger – this could be an event or a thought. This causes you to worry and feel nervous in the short term. In the long term, however, it can even cause severe anxiety and health problems. Despite allowing us to work more effectively to a deadline – or even escape danger – in the short term, we should learn how to combat severe stress to ensure that it doesn’t affect our lives negatively.

Does this sound familiar to you? Moving house can cause us to feel nervous, or to worry about things that are out of our control. Are you worried about not being able to afford the move? Or concerned that you will be overpaying for your energy bills?

Moving house should be exciting, not stressful

I know, easier said than done, right? But let’s list a few fundamental things to remember when moving house that could lower that cortisol:

  • You’re not alone. There are so many companies, advice forums and blogs out there to assist your move. From moving van companies to forums about how to efficiently pack your bags, you can find the assistance you need.
  • You shouldn’t be overcharged. Remember, when it comes to paying your utility bills, a price cap exists on how much your energy supplier can charge you. This is government regulated, so if you spend a bit more on your move than you would have hoped, you can be reassured that your energy bills won’t cause an extra sting on your bank account.
  • As well as the cap, there are a number of cheaper energy suppliers out there, like Bulb Energy. They offer very affordable tariffs and fair deals to their customers.

Feeling a bit more relaxed? Let’s go even further.

What steps can you take to reduce your general stress levels? Planning ahead and taking time for yourself can both help you make your move a positive experience

Take some time for yourself

Deep breathing exercises, meditation and mindfulness can all help to lower your stress and boost your energy in both the short and long term. Moving house is overwhelming and takes over a period of your life. Being able to step away from the mania of moving and take some time to breathe will help you focus on the tasks at hand. As well as helping yourself in this way, having some reflexology can enable you to enjoy the process more.

Prepare all the essentials ahead of time

Make checklists, prepare your boxes and bags ahead of time and sort out all the important documents before moving in day. There are a number of tasks to do ahead of time, such as figuring out what energy plan you want to sign up to, switching all your subscriptions over to your new address, and more. Doing all of these things bit by bit will mean that you won’t have to worry about any lost post or pricey energy plans. Check out Ofgem’s guide to make your moving experience go smoother.

Practise reflexology
